Shanghai, China, 1930's. Archive film 94478
Shanghai in China in 1937. People weave across a 'zig-zag bridge' that crosses a river - it is made out of wood. We follow it lead to a platform with a canopy, then continue back out in the same way. A temple is seen through a gap between two buildings. Two women with covered heads enter a Tea House, up some stairs and in between two wooden pillars. Some dolls sitting upright in chairs. What looks like a model of a temple, very elaborate, and the camera sweeps down to show some traditionally dressed figures on the steps at the entrance, then back up to a balcony. This is a house-hold shrine made of gold and silver and pearl. An arm with an elaborate sleeve opens a small wooden door - inside is a tall, perhaps gold, engraved pillar. Before this pillar a man in highly embroidered ki...

Great, candid photography of fresh sea catches being hauled off fishing boats and sold at open air markets. Throughout the film, at the end of numerous shots, the camera zips to the left or right to photograph a man rather theatrically tapping a large microphone - this was done for the purpose of helping to accurately syncronise an audio track recorded simultaneously but on a separate roll from the picture.
Numerous fishing boats anchored to the docks - some ships are departing and some are just arriving - two men carrying a basket of freshly caught fish to the docks. The bow of a fishing boat bearing Chinese writing on the ...

In this Shanghai archive footage you can see a one of the four direct-administered municipalities of the People's Republic of China (PRC).The city is located on the southern estuary of the Yangtze River, with the Huangpu River flowing through it. The population of the city proper is the third greatest in the world, with 24.89 million inhabitants in 2021, while the urban area is the most populous in China, with 39.3 million residents. *WHY 8MM & SUPER8 HOME MOVIE ARCHIVAL FOOTAGE IS IMPORTANT?*
Old Family films shot on 8mm/super8 (sometimes even on 16mm or 35mm) are an invaluable collection of unseen personal testimonies from our history.
Unfortunately, the condition of these film reels is often dramatic, as they are stored in inadequate places and handed down to individuals who don’t know how to project them.
At Archival Footage Service, we strive to build an archive of family films that is accessible to everyone through our YouTube channel.

Before this pillar a man in highly embroidered kimono bows and rises with his back to us. Another with a different gown, and elaborate hair style, bows. Close up of embroidered lions and Dragons.

A brief shot of a man walking towards the camera down a narrow street with shops on either side. Shots across men's heads into what may be a market. A man sits cross legged on a stool in the entrance of his shop, which has no front but material draped down. A shot of some boys - maybe a family - some bare-chested around a table in an open fronted room.

Shanghai, China, a shop with Chinese symbols and lettering. A shop with a large banner in front, a well dressed lady walks past, then a man, and another on a bicycle. A closer shot of the woman. Views down a street, showing open - fronted shops full of clothes hanging down from the ceilings. Outside one is a large group of Chinese. Several boys pushing a rickshaw pass in front, very close to the camera. Another passes, and a group of young Chinese men walk past the shop in 'typical' clothing. Road traffic continues. A brief shot of a man walking towards the camera down a narrow street with shops on either side. Shots across men's heads into what may be a market. A man sits cross legged on a stool in the entrance of his shop, which has no front but material draped down.
The bow of a fishing boat bearing Chinese writing on the side as it sails along, carrying at least two men aboard standing with hands in their pockets - zoom out to show entire boat and other ships arriving. Montage - men mostly in pairs hauling fish in buckets up to the docks. A fisherman aboard a small, wooden boat sits and chops multiple times at a fish on the floorboard. Fishermen bringing baskets of fish to the dock, others in blue Mao suits stand along the dock chatting and laughing. More men brining baskets of caught fish off a wooden boat across a walkway to the dock. A very small raft with two men aboard sails underneath a bridge packed with bicyclists. View from a higher elevation of fishermen bringing baskets of fresh catches across a walkway to the dock. Fishing boats parked at the harbor in the foreground - not as much commotion, at most just a few fishermen chatting or standing around on a few ships - as a single boat drifts in the distance.
Huntley Film Archives is a film library holding tens of thousands of films. The large majority of the films are documentaries. Films cover a wide range of subjects and production dates range from the 1890’s to the 2020’s. As with all libraries we make no judgement on the content of our holdings and make them available for educational purposes for all to see. Films may have content or express opinions some may think inappropriate or offensive, but it is not the work of a library to censor educational resources. Films should be viewed with historical objectivity and within a context relevant to the times in which they were produced
